Making the Knot

We dress the end with selotape
push the end inside the hollow quill
pull the quill out
pull the ends
lock the turns
make perfect Inca knot
on any string

Mnemonic Knot
Many-turns Knot is Inca knot.
How did Inca do the turns?
On quill?
If on quill - the end must have been dressed.

Quill or no quill
the end must have been dressed
to work it through the loop
How dressed?

How did Inca work the end?

If end not dressed
How did Inca work the end throught the loop?

Footprint/evidence might have survived on end of string

I have no access to Inca quipu
I have seen quipu once 30 years ago
in the British Museum
it was in glass box

Do we have research document on end of string?
---------------
I do my Inca knots in my front room.
Sack full of all kinds of strings
- table with drawer
tools in the drawer
Cup of tea by my side
It is a pleasure making quipu
working message in Inca knots

but the Inca - imagine
Inca alone in open field
alone under Heaven
Survival Quipu
making strings
making turns
working end
making Servival Knot.

I BELIEVE IN GOD AND CHRIST. THIS IS A DREAM ABOUT MEETING GOD AND TRYING TO SEE HIM. I HAD THIS DREAM IN MY EARLY TWENTIES, I AM NOW THIRTY SEVEN. I START OFF IN THIS HUGE OPEN FIELD OF BEAUTIFUL GREEN GRASS WITH LIMESTONE ROCK EVERYWHERE. THE SKY IS A VERY BOLD BLUE. IN GROUPS FORMED IN CIRCLES ARE PEOPLE SITTING AND HEADS ARE BOWED. THEIR CLOTHES ARE LIKE THE ONES IN THE SEVEN COMMANDMENTS MOVIE, WITH CHARLTON HESTON. I WALK AROUND AND SEE ALL THESE PEOPLE THERE, JUST IN CIRCLES SITTING WITH THEIR HEAD BOWED DOWN. I FINALLY GO TO ONE GROUP AND ASKED WHEY ARE YOU SITTING HERE. THE REPLY, WE ARE WAITING FOR GOD TO APPEAR, SO WHEN HEAR WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. NOW THE PERSON WHO WAS SPEAKING WAS VERY FAMILIAR. I KNEW IT, MOSES. EXACT GARB OF CLOTHING, THAT CHARLTON HESTON WORE IN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. I ASK HIM, ARE YOU MOSES. HE SAYS YES AND INTRODUCES HIS WIFE TO HIS RIGHT AND ALL THE MEMBERS IN THE GROUP. THEY ALL HAD GREY BEARDS AND JUST BEARDS PERIOD. AT LEAST SEVEN IN THIS CIRCLE. I TELL SUPPOSEDLY MOSES, YEAH RIGHT, YOU ARE NOT MOSES, BUT CHARLTON HESTON, WHO IMAGES HIMSELF AFTER WHAT MOSES WOULD LOOK LIKE. HE SAYS NO I AM HIM AND WE AWAIT GOD. I SAY WELL I AM NOT WORTHY TO SIT WITH YOU AND I AM TO WALK AROUND. HE ADVISES ME NOT TO. SO IN MY WALK, AN OLD BROWN WOODEN HOUSE, SIX HUNDRED SQUARE FEET. A PERFECT LITTLE HOUSE, BUT OLD AND RICKETY. I OPEN THE DOOR AND IN THIS HOUSE ARE ALL MY INDIAN AND MEXICAN FAMILY MEMBERS, ALIVE AND PAST AWAY. I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THEM ALL. I FELT SO MUCH INNER PEACE. SO NOW I ATTEMPT TO FIND ONE FAMILY MEMBER TO TELL OF THAT GOD IS GOING TO APPEAR RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOOR. I TELL A COUSIN, BUT BACK OUT OF MY STORY AND WALK OUT THE DOOR. I TURN AROUND AND THE HOUSE IS GONE. I THEN WALK AWAY FROM THE SUPPOSEDLY MOSES GROUP. THE SKY TURNS A WHITE CLOUD COLOR AND A VOICE OF RESEMBLENCE TO THUNDER, SAYS SIT DOWN. I STOP IN MY TRACKS AND SAY TO MYSELF NO. I KEEP ON WALKING AND THE VOICE ECHOES ACROSS THE SKY AGAIN, SIT DOWN. I STOP, BECASUE YOU SEE I FELT THAT ONE THROUGH MY WHOLE BODY. I SAYS TO MYSELF, YOU KNOW WHAT I WILL TURN AROUND AND SEE THIS MYSTERIOUS GOD. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE. I TURN AROUND AND THE LIGHT WAS SO BRIGHT I COULD NOT SEE. I TAKE MY HANDS AND COULPE THEM TOGETHER AND TRY TO SEE THROUGH THE CRACKS OF MY FINGERS. FOR I WANT TO SEE THIS MYSTERIOUS GOD. I TRY TO LOOK AND MY EYE IS BLINDED, IT IS AS IF YOU ARE LOOKING DIRECTLY INTO A LIGHT BULB. I COULD NOT SEE. I TRY ONCE MORE, TO SEE AN IMAGE OF A MAN OR WHAT. AS I TAKE A PEEK, A LOUD THUNDEROUS VOICE SAYS SIT DOWN. THIS TIME MY WHOLE BODY FELT EVERY EMOTION I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN ONE SHOT. HURT, PAIN, LAUGHTER, TEARS OF JOY AND SADNESS, EXCITED, HATRED, LOVE, DEATH, NEWBORN AND FINALLY FIZZLED OUT WITH EXHAUSTEMNT. I FELL TO MY KNEES AND CRIED AND CRAWLED TO THE NEAREST CIRLCE OF PEOPLE AND THERE WAS MOSES, HE SAID COME SIT MY SON WITH US AND JOIN US IN THE OFFERING OF HOLY COMMUNION. HE OPENED UP A BASKET AND A FISH LAY THERE AND HE TOOK A PIECE AND PASSED THE BASKET AROUND FOR EVERYONE TO TAKE A BITE. WHEN CAME TO MY TURN, I CRINGED AT THE TASTE TO BE EXPECTED. I TOOK A PIECE IN MY MOUTH AND IT TASTED LIKE COMMUNION, THEY OFFER AT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. I TOLD MOSE AND THE REST THERE, I AM SINNER AND I DO NOT BELONG WITH YOU FOLKS, I HAVE DONE WRONG ALL MY LIFE. HE NODDED AND SAYS YES WE ALL HAVE, DO YOU NOW BELIEVE THERE IS A GOD AND NO OTHERE SHALL TAKE HIS PLACE AS SO HIGH. I SAID YES, I FEAR NO MAN BUT GOD. I THEN WOKE UP SWEATING AND CRYING, BUT YET FELT CLEAN AND FREE. I SEE THE WORLD IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT NOW AND SEE THE CHERISHING MOMENTS OF LIFE ON A DAILY BASIS. I HAVE A JOB AND A GOOD WOMEN, BUT NEVERTHELESS I BELIEVE TO GET AS CLOSE AS TO GOD AS I HAVE EVER BEEN. I COULD NOT SEE HIM, AS HARD AS I TRIED, BUT FELT HIM, HEARD HIS VOICE THROUGH THUNDER, AND THE ONLY IMAGE WAS THE BRIGHTEST WHITEST LIGHT I HAVE EVER SEEN. THERE IS A GOD AND HE LOVES US ALL. GOD JUST WANTS US TO LOVE HIM AND FREELY TAKE CARE OF THOSE WHO LOST ALL HOPE. THE POOR AND THE MEEK ARE THE ONES WE SHOULD CHERISH. LIVE LIFE SIMPLE AND CHERISH THE PRECIOUS MOMENTS, FOR HOW LONG ARE WE HERE ON EARTH FOR, QUESTION, NO ONE KNOWS BUT ARE CREATOR. THERE ARE MANY RELIGIONS, WHO FIGHT FOR WHICH ONE IS THE BEST OR ULITMATE. ONE GOD, AND HE WANTS US TO LOVE EACH OTHER AND TAKE CARE OF ONE ANOTHER, TREAT EACH OTHER KINDLY, AND WHEN HARM OR HATRED IS UPON US, JUST THINK THAT THIS IS GODS CHILD, JUST AS I AM. HE LOVES HIM OR HER, JUST AS HE LOVES ME. I WILL STAND AS A SOLDIER FOR GOD AND DO HIS BIDDING. THE STORY HERE TODAY HAS AFFECTED MY LIFE AND SHOWN ME A NEW WAY OF LIVING. TO ENJOY THE WORLD AND THE SMALL THINGS, THE POOREST ARE THE BEST COVERSATIONALIST AND THE MOST GENUINE, I HAVE FOUND SO FAR, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF WEALTHY FOLKS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED THAT ARE JUST AS REAL. I JUST DON WALK IN THOSE CIRCLES OF PEOPLE OF MONEY. ITS NOT THAT I DONT WANT TO, ITS JUST, I DEAL WITH PEOPLE IN AN ORDINARY WAY OF LIFE. GOD IS GREAT AND HE IS THERE WITH HIS ANGELS WATCHING US.

I don't think ganorrhea cases per 100,000 has as much to do with religion as it does with poverty, (south has a lot of poverty) and population density (south has high population density compared to states like Montana).

I've never ever read Dogen, nor heard of him but if I may be allowed my two cents, I think he means to draw an analogy of something like

we try to be independent, but the truth is, we all depend on each other. One cannot exist without the other. The sea without the fish, the air without the birds, water without air, fish without birds or air, and so forth.

Life is this minuscule-ly mis-mashed triangle of relationships.

Err. I just read your last post :) yep thats what I was trying to say too:D

Wow! those are a lot of requests in this comment section. (I didn't actually read through all of them but safe to say that most of them are pointing in the general direction of "Help me with my english").

That stuff was the guy who lived there before his. LOL! so the "stuff" was actually a guy who lived there before his..?? I could have never guessed lol!

Anyways, I was on a mission to find my long lost classmates and searching for a particular one, I was shooed this way by google.

Would the respected quipu researchers please correct
my knots on quipu Number 91
www.muzeumsczytaja.info/page18.html

It is R to L and should read ZDOL
(Lodz, my hometown Lodz).

also please correct quipu Number 21 on page 11
It reads ONECHNA - turn 'i' missing.

do think that we all had past lives?
I come from a very spiritual family because i am native american and we believe in demons and spirits, but i some times think that my tribe could have thought this all up and passed it down for generations and we now are afraid of these evil spirits, or demons.
If you can please try to get back to me on this i would very much appreciate it!!!!

thank you!!

There is a pub called Jack and Jill in Sussex by the Sea
that is offering pint of beer for free to man or woman
reciting Inca knots

How did that came about?

70 years ago when I was 21 I was drinking beer in the Jack and Jill.
Now, at 81 I wanted to do something special for the pub of my youth

So I picked up Jack and Jill quipu and went with it to see Paul Harman the manager of the Jack and Jill pub

I give you £20 - you give pint of beer for free to man or woman
for reciting/interpreting Inca knots, said I.

Paul Harman accepted my offer and gave me receipt for the £20.
He put the quipu on the wall and now any man or woman
can ask for pint of beer for free reciting Inca knots

When the £20 runs out I'll give you a bell, said Paul

When the £20 runs out I'll give you £200 more
and when the £200 runs out I'll give you £2,000 more
and when the £2,000 runs out I'll give you £4,000 more
to keep Jack and Jill in pints of beer for free - that's a promise.

"Are you making this offeer to any other pub?" asked Paul.

No. There is only one pub in the world that is offering
pint of beer for free and that pub is the Jack and Jill
in Sussex by the Sea, I replied

Now I am laughing for the pub that is offering pint of beer for free.

I am inviting knot readers - and knot-proof readers for pint of beer for free at the Jack and Jill pub in Sussex by the Sea

May I put this on the internet? I asked. Paul Harman said Yes.

If you put it on the internet the Americans will be coming.
The Americans will spend £1,000 on air-ticket and £1,000 on hotel
and the Americans will be coming to the Jack and Jill for pint of beer for free -- the Americans are mad! said Marta.

I am inviting men and women to come anf enjoy pint of beer for free
at the Jack and Jill pub in Sussex by the Sea
and have fun reciting True Jack and Jill story off Inca knots

Jundo--thanks for your comment. Most basically the question is whether "A is B" is likely to be a useful--in the sense of helping the reader understand something of what Dogen was trying to communicate-- translation of 以A為B.

At the purely syntactical level, it seems unlikely. At the semantic level, it seems even more unlikely, given what we know about this expression and its components. And finally at the philosophical level, the only justification for the "A is B" translation is a preconception on the part of the translator that that "must" have been what Dogen meant because "that's the kind of thing Dogen or other Zen teachers say."

The philosophical level is highly subjective and we cannot criticize other translators' choices, <b>as long as their interpretations are based on sound lexical, syntactic, semantic, and discourse flow analysis of the original text.</b> All too often they're not. This is one of those cases.

I myself do not pretend to interpret or elucidate on Dogen's deeper meaning. I simply try to go where the original text takes me. However, that does not prevent me from noting when the result makes pleasing sense. In this case, to my untutored mind the idea that life, bird/fish, and sea/sky are connected in a cycle of interdependency makes more sense than that they are somehow all mushed into one.

I'll go back to "sustain", and drop nurture and even nourish if using those words obscures the central point.

I believe an "experience of beauty" can be a prelude to a true mystical experience.
I would be pleased to discuss this idea with anyone that may be interested
